Following on from my last post about the debate concerning David Starkey’s comments on Newsnight, it turns out that over 100 historians from across Britain have sent a petition to the BBC to ask them to stop referring to Starkey as a historian unless it is in relation to his study of the Tudor period.
I don’t know what to think. Yes, as I’ve discussed, Starkey’s comments were invalid, stupid, a little racist and made without thought or research behind them, but to say that he should no longer be considered as a historian seems a little extreme. Poor bloke! We all make mistakes don’t we?
What do you think about the whole situation? Should David’s rights to comment on anything he wants be removed or should he admit that he made a mistake and move on? There are surely more important things going on in the world right now aren’t there?
